Deciduous tree which grows up to 20 meters tall. Crown is wide and slightly domed. The large green leaves turn yellow in autumn. White flowers are gathered in large, erect panicles and occur in late spring. The glossy, dark brown inedible fruits ripen in autumn. 
The A. hippocastanum “Baumannii” variety has full off-white flowers with shades of pink or yellow.
